Congrats to Auburn! Enjoy! Can you explain why War Eagle & Tigers? It confuses this buckeye fan.
ReplyDeleteI kind of still can't believe that we won! Okay, the Tiger, Aubie, is our true mascot, while 'War Eagle'is the battle cry (and name of the school fight song, or friendly greeting if you are in Auburn, Alabama or see a fellow Tiger out and about). The story of how 'War Eagle' came to be dates back to the 1890's. It is said that during an Auburn v Georgia game, an eagle circled the field and excited the fans at a critical moment and Auburn won the game!! Auburn has kept golden eagles periodically since 1930 and solidly since the 1960's as a secondary mascot. The Eagle (Nova or War Eagle VII) flies at the beginning of every game at Jordan-Hare--this is truly an awe-inspiring scene and part of what makes seeing games in Auburn so very special. I can't wait to take Westin to Auburn!!!
ReplyDeleteThanks for the great explanation! I've been wondering all season but just never asked what you meant by war eagle. I even asked John (who is a sports guru) but the didn't really know. He also appreciated your fun facts. You need to go teach at Auburn and get season tickets to the game when Westin is a little older. I'm lucky enough to get season tix for working at OSU and for the past 2 years John has begged me to let him take Ian to a game. I think when he can sit still for more than 5 min, it might work out. Love the tp on the tree!
